PMB 65/105 Polymer Modified Bitumen Specifications & Supply

A medium-soft modified binder, quoted against your specification

PMB 65/105 is a polymer modified bitumen with a nominal penetration range of 65 to 105 (0.1 mm at 25°C). In our polymer modified bitumen range, it marks the step from the mid-range binders into the softer part of the family.

Turkey Bitumen is operated by Tiger Bitumen and HY International Group. We supply this binder to contractors, asphalt producers and importers with Turkey-related requirements, from Tiger Bitumen’s export facilities in Karachi Free Zone, Pakistan, and Ajman, UAE. Every quotation is prepared against the specification you send us.

Where PMB 65/105 Sits in the PMB Family

A penetration result between 65 and 105 means the standard needle sinks between 6.5 and 10.5 mm into the binder at 25°C. That makes this binder noticeably softer than the 45/80 range, and the first range in the family whose whole window sits above the mid-range.

The range shares part of its window with four neighbours:

Range Shared penetration band
PMB 40/100 65-100
PMB 45/80 65-80
PMB 75/130 75-105
PMB 90/150 90-105

These are separate classes with their own requirements, so we quote against the range your specification names.

Complete Designation and Softening Point

In EN 14023, 65/105 is the penetration part of a designation. The complete designation adds a softening-point requirement selected by the specifier from the standard’s classes. The specification may also add requirements for elastic recovery, cold behaviour, storage stability and resistance to hardening.

The softening-point class that applies to PMB 65/105 comes from your project specification, so we don’t publish a single figure for the range. The complete designation is confirmed at quotation stage, against your specification and the TDS supplied with our offer. For background, see Tiger Bitumen’s explanation of how EN 14023 designations are built.

Work in Turkey is often specified under TS EN 14023 or a project technical specification based on it. Send whichever document governs your project with your enquiry.

Cold-Behaviour and Ageing Requirements

Softer binders are often chosen where flexibility matters, but softness alone doesn’t guarantee how a binder performs in cold weather or after ageing. Those properties are set separately. Before comparing offers for this range, check two things:

  • Does your specification set a cold-behaviour requirement? This is usually expressed as a Fraass breaking point. If it does, the TDS for each offer should state it, and the batch COA should report it.
  • Does your specification set requirements after ageing? These could include retained penetration, a change in softening point, or elastic recovery after ageing. If so, check that each offer covers them, not only the properties of the fresh binder.

An offer that leaves out a property your specification requires isn’t comparable to one that includes it, even if both are described as the same range.

Turkey’s climate ranges from mild coastal regions to cold upland interiors. Projects in colder areas may set stricter cold-behaviour requirements than projects elsewhere. Your pavement engineer sets these requirements, and we quote against them.

Properties to Confirm Before Ordering

Property Status for the 65/105 range Commonly referenced test
Penetration at 25°C Fixed: 65-105 (0.1 mm) EN 1426
Softening point (ring and ball) Per the class in your specification EN 1427
Fraass breaking point (cold behaviour) Per your specification, if required EN 12593
Elastic recovery Per your specification, if required EN 13398
Storage stability Per your specification, if required EN 13399
Resistance to hardening (ageing) Per your specification, if required EN 12607-1

Only the penetration range is fixed by the name. The TDS for the offered product states every other value, and the batch COA reports it.

Storage Stability on Long Supply Routes

When PMB is sourced internationally, time passes between production, shipment, arrival and use. If the binder will be reheated and held hot at the destination before use, storage stability becomes a practical concern. This is the binder’s resistance to separating during hot storage.

If your specification includes a storage-stability requirement, confirm that the TDS and COA address it. Tell us at enquiry stage how long you expect to store the binder after arrival, and how you’ll store it. Storage temperature, storage time and any agitation should follow the TDS for the offered product. Tiger Bitumen explains why PMB storage stability matters in more detail.

Where the 65/105 Range Is Typically Specified

Modified binders in this range are generally associated with layers where flexibility is a priority, for example:

  • Surface courses on roads where the specification calls for a softer modified binder
  • Projects in cooler climates where the specifying authority has chosen a softer range
  • Overlays and rehabilitation of existing flexible pavements

These are general patterns. The pavement engineer sets the range and full class for each project.

Compared with Unmodified and Neighbouring Binders

Binder Difference from the 65/105 range
PMB 75/130 Next softer PMB range; overlaps between 75 and 105
Bitumen 80/100, 85/100 and 100/120 Unmodified penetration grades with numbers in or near this window. They contain no polymer and use a different specification basis, so they aren't substitutes
Performance Grade bitumen A separate classification by pavement temperature. There is no automatic PG equivalent for this range

Supplying the 65/105 Range for Turkey-Related Projects

Turkey Bitumen gives buyers with Turkey-related requirements an additional documented source for this range. That includes contractors and asphalt producers on projects in Turkey, importers who currently buy from Turkish suppliers, and consultants who need a second offer for a tender.

For a softer modified binder, the comparison should cover more than specification match and price. It should also cover how the binder will be shipped, received and stored before use. Send us the designation and specification you buy against, together with your storage plans at destination. We’ll quote on the same technical basis. Availability, quantity and shipment schedule are confirmed for each enquiry.

Documentation and Inspection

  • Terms: FOB, CFR or CIF.
  • Inspection: SGS or Bureau Veritas inspection before shipment on request, or an inspector you appoint.
  • Documents: the TDS for the offered product, plus commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, COA and safety data sheet, depending on shipment and destination.
  • Packaging: agreed at quotation stage to suit your receiving and storage arrangements.

Check that the COA reports every property your specification lists for this range, including cold-behaviour and post-ageing results where they’re required. Tiger Bitumen’s PMB TDS and COA checklist is a useful reference.

Frequently Asked Questions

PMB 65/105 FAQs

What is PMB 65/105?

A polymer modified bitumen with a nominal penetration range of 65 to 105 (0.1 mm) at 25°C. It's the first of the softer ranges in the PMB family.

Is 65/105 a complete EN 14023 designation?

No. It's only the penetration part. The complete designation also includes a softening-point requirement set by your specification, which is confirmed at quotation stage.

Does a softer range automatically perform better in cold weather?

No. Cold-weather behaviour is set by separate requirements, such as a Fraass breaking point, if your specification includes one. Check that each offer's TDS and COA cover it.

Why does storage stability matter for this binder?

If the binder will be held hot after arrival, separation during storage can affect consistency. Confirm any storage-stability requirement in your specification, and follow the TDS on storage temperature and time.

Can Bitumen 80/100 or 100/120 be used instead?

Only if your specification allows it. Those are unmodified grades specified on a different basis.

Is there a PG equivalent?

Not automatically. EN 14023 and PG are separate classification systems. If your project is specified in PG terms, we quote against the PG grade.

Can you supply this range for a project in Turkey?

Yes. We supply as an international source from Tiger Bitumen's export facilities in Karachi Free Zone and Ajman. TurkeyBitumen.com is not a Turkish manufacturer. Availability and schedule are confirmed for each enquiry.
