PMB 10/40 Polymer Modified Bitumen Specifications & Supply
The hardest range in the PMB family, quoted against your project specification
PMB 10/40 is a polymer modified bitumen with a nominal penetration range of 10 to 40 (0.1 mm at 25°C), the hardest of the nine ranges in our polymer modified bitumen range. It appears in specifications where a pavement layer needs a very stiff modified binder.
TurkeyBitumen.com, operated by Tiger Bitumen and HY International Group, supplies PMB 10/40 to contractors, asphalt producers and importers with Turkey-related requirements, from Tiger Bitumen’s export facilities in Karachi Free Zone, Pakistan, and Ajman, UAE. Every PMB 10/40 offer is prepared against the specification you send us.

What the 10/40 Range Tells You and What It Doesn't
The numbers 10/40 describe consistency. A penetration test pushes a standard needle into the binder at 25°C, and for this range the result must fall between 1.0 and 4.0 mm. That makes PMB 10/40 a very hard binder compared with the other PMB ranges.
What the range does not tell you is how the binder behaves at high or low temperatures, how elastic it is, or how stable it remains in hot storage. Those properties are set separately in the specification, and two products both sold as “PMB 10/40” can differ significantly on them. Treat 10/40 as the starting point of a requirement, not the whole requirement.
Complete Designation and Softening Point
Under EN 14023, 10/40 is the penetration part of a designation. A complete designation also states a softening-point requirement, selected by the specifier from the classes the standard provides, and the specification may add requirements for elastic recovery, storage stability, cold behaviour and properties after ageing.
The applicable softening-point class for PMB 10/40 therefore depends on your project specification. We do not publish a single “standard” softening point for this range, because there isn’t one. The complete designation is confirmed against your specification and the TDS supplied with our quotation. For background, see Tiger Bitumen’s explanation of how EN 14023 designations are built.
Projects in Turkey commonly reference TS EN 14023 or a project-specific technical specification. Buyers elsewhere may work to a national or contract document. Whichever applies, send it with your enquiry.
Properties to Confirm Before Ordering
| Property | Status for PMB 10/40 | Commonly referenced test |
| Penetration at 25°C | Fixed by the range: 10-40 (0.1 mm) | EN 1426 |
| Softening point (ring and ball) | Per the class in your specification | EN 1427 |
| Elastic recovery | Per your specification, if required | EN 13398 |
| Storage stability | Per your specification, if required | EN 13399 |
| Fraass breaking point (cold behaviour) | Per your specification, if required | EN 12593 |
| Properties after ageing | Per your specification, if required | As stated in the specification |
Values are not listed here because they depend on the complete designation. They are stated in the TDS for the offered product and reported on the batch COA.
Where PMB 10/40 Is Typically Specified
As the hardest PMB range, 10/40 is generally associated with stiff, heavily loaded pavement layers, for example:
- High-modulus base and binder courses
- Heavy-duty pavements at ports, container yards and logistics hubs
- Routes with slow, heavy or channelized traffic, such as climbing lanes and approaches to junctions
- Airport pavements where the design calls for a very stiff modified binder
These are typical contexts, not a substitute for pavement design. Hardness that helps resist deformation under heat and heavy loads can work against cracking resistance in cold conditions. Turkey’s climates range from hot coastal regions to cold continental interiors, so a 10/40 specification suited to one region may not suit another. The specifying engineer decides whether 10/40 is right; we supply against that decision.
PMB 10/40 Compared with Similar Binders
“10/40” is often confused with unmodified hard grades or with neighbouring PMB ranges. They are not substitutes.
| Binder | How it differs from PMB 10/40 |
| PMB 25/55 | Next PMB range up; softer overall. Its range overlaps 10/40 between 25 and 40, but they are separate classes buy the one your specification names |
| Bitumen 30/40 or40/50 | Unmodified penetration grades. Similar-looking numbers, but no polymer and a different specification basis. See all unmodified penetration grades |
| Hard paving grades | Unmodified hard bitumen's are covered by separate standard (for example EN 13924-1). A hard unmodified grade is not a PMB 10/40 |
| Performance Grade bitumen | Different classification system based on pavement temperatures. There is no automatic PG equivalent for PMB 10/40 |
Handling Considerations
A hard modified binder generally needs more attention to temperature control during storage, pumping and mixing than softer grades. Storage temperature, maximum storage time and any agitation requirement should follow the TDS for the offered product. Packaging for PMB 10/40 is agreed at quotation stage so that it matches your receiving and handling arrangements.
Supplying PMB 10/40 for Turkey Related Projects
PMB 10/40 is a specialized range, and buyers often have limited supply options for it. TurkeyBitumen.com gives contractors on projects in Turkey, and importers who currently source from Turkish suppliers, an additional offer to compare.
If you already buy PMB 10/40, send us the specification and designation you buy against. We will quote on the same technical basis so you can compare specification match, documentation, inspection, shipping terms and delivered cost directly. Availability, quantity and shipment schedule are confirmed for each enquiry.
Documentation, Inspection and Export
- Terms: FOB, CFR or CIF.
- Inspection: SGS or Bureau Veritas inspection before shipment on request, or your own appointed inspector.
- Documents: commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, COA and safety data sheet, depending on shipment and destination, plus the TDS for the offered product.
For PMB 10/40, check that the COA reports the softening point and any other properties your specification requires, not only penetration. Tiger Bitumen’s guide covers what to check in a PMB TDS and COA.

PMB 10/40 FAQs
A polymer modified bitumen with a nominal penetration range of 10 to 40 (0.1 mm) at 25°C. It is the hardest of the nine PMB ranges we quote.
No. Under EN 14023, 10/40 is the penetration part. The complete designation also includes a softening-point requirement set by your specification, and it is confirmed at quotation stage.
It is generally associated with stiff, heavily loaded layers such as high-modulus courses and heavy-duty port or industrial pavements. Suitability for your project is set by the pavement design and specification.
No. Bitumen 30/40 is an unmodified penetration grade. PMB 10/40 is polymer modified and specified under a different framework, so one cannot replace the other unless your specification allows it.
Not automatically. PG and EN 14023 are separate classification systems. If your project is specified in PG terms, we quote against the PG grade instead.
Yes. We supply as an international source from Tiger Bitumen's export facilities in Karachi Free Zone and Ajman. TurkeyBitumen.com is not a Turkish manufacturer. Availability and schedule are confirmed for each enquiry.
