PMB 40/100 Polymer Modified Bitumen Specifications & Supply

A wide modified range, quoted against the full class your specification sets

PMB 40/100 is a polymer modified bitumen with a nominal penetration range of 40 to 100 (0.1 mm at 25°C). It is the widest window in the middle of our polymer modified bitumen range, and specifications that name it usually rely on the other class requirements to define the binder.

TurkeyBitumen.com, operated by Tiger Bitumen and HY International Group, supplies this binder to contractors, asphalt producers and importers with Turkey related requirements. Supply is arranged from Tiger Bitumen’s export facilities in Karachi Free Zone, Pakistan, and Ajman, UAE. Every quotation is prepared against the specification you send us.

Why a Wide Range Gets Specified?

A penetration result between 40 and 100 means the standard needle sinks between 4.0 and 10.0 mm into the binder at 25°C. That covers ground from the firmer end of the mid-range to the softer end.

When the penetration window is this wide, it does less of the work of defining the binder. The rest of the class requirements carry more weight: the softening-point requirement, and wherever the specification sets them, elastic recovery, cold behaviour, storage stability and properties after ageing. Two offers that both meet 40/100 on penetration can still be very different binders if those other requirements differ. For that reason, read the whole specification clause, not only the range.

How PMB 40/100 Overlaps Other Ranges

The 40/100 window overlaps five other PMB ranges, more than any other range we quote:

Range Shared penetration band
PMB 25/55 40-55
PMB 45/80 45-80 (the whole of 45/80)
PMB 65/105 65-100
PMB 75/130 75-100
PMB 90/150 90-100

Each of these is a separate class with its own softening-point requirement and, depending on the specification, other property requirements. A product declared against one of them isn’t automatically acceptable where 40/100 is named, and the reverse is also true. The PMB 45/80 page covers the most common case, 45/80 against 40/100, in more detail.

Complete Designation and Softening Point

In EN 14023, 40/100 is the penetration part of a designation. The complete designation adds a softening-point requirement chosen by the specifier from the standard’s classes. The specification may also set requirements for elastic recovery, storage stability, cold behavior and resistance to hardening.

The softening-point class that applies to PMB 40/100 is set by your project specification, so we don’t publish a single figure for the range. The complete designation is confirmed at quotation stage, against your specification and the TDS supplied with our offer. Tiger Bitumen explains how EN 14023 designations are built if you need the background.

For projects in Turkey, the governing document is often TS EN 14023 or a project technical specification derived from it. Please send whichever applies with your enquiry.

Consistency Across Deliveries

With a 60-unit penetration window, every batch that tests anywhere from 40 to 100 meets the penetration part of the requirement. For some projects that is fine. For others, such as an asphalt plant running a fixed mix design across several deliveries, a large swing between batches can matter even when every batch is compliant.

If consistency between deliveries is important to your project, tell us at enquiry stage so it can be discussed alongside the specification. Tiger Bitumen’s article on how PMB is tested and evaluated explains what batch test results do and don’t tell you.

Properties to Confirm Before Ordering

Property Status for the 40/100 range Commonly referenced test
Penetration at 25°C Fixed: 40-100 (0.1 mm) EN 1426
Softening point (ring and ball) Per the class in your specification EN 1427
Elastic recovery Per your specification, if required EN 13398
Storage stability Per your specification, if required EN 13399
Fraass breaking point Per your specification, if required EN 12593
Resistance to hardening (ageing) Per your specification, if required EN 12607-1

Only the penetration range is fixed by the name. All other values depend on the complete designation and appear in the TDS for the offered product and on the batch COA.

Where the 40/100 Range Is Typically Specified

Because the class set does most of the defining, the uses of this range vary with the softening-point class and other requirements chosen. It generally appears in:

  • Wearing and binder courses on highways and urban roads
  • Surfacing and rehabilitation work where the specifier wants flexibility in penetration but firm control of other properties
  • Mix designs where a modified binder is required and the specification sets the performance through the class requirements

These are general patterns. The pavement engineer sets the range and class for each project, and we quote against that requirement.

Compared with Unmodified and PG Binders

Binder Difference from the 40/100 range
Bitumen 80/100 and 85/100 Unmodified penetration grades whose numbers fall inside this window. No polymer and a different specification basis, so they are not substitutes
Performance Grade bitumen A separate classification by pavement temperature. There is no automatic PG equivalent for this range

Supplying the 40/100 Range for Turkey Related Projects

Turkey Bitumen offers buyers with Turkey related requirements an additional, documented source for this range. That includes contractors and asphalt producers on projects in Turkey, importers who currently buy from Turkish suppliers, and consultants who need a second compliant offer for a tender.

If you already buy this binder, send us the complete designation and specification you buy against, plus any consistency expectations. We’ll quote on the same basis, so you can compare specification match, documentation, inspection, shipping terms and delivered cost. Availability, quantity and shipment schedule are confirmed for each enquiry.

Documentation, Inspection and Handling

  • Terms: FOB, CFR or CIF.
  • Inspection: SGS or Bureau Veritas before shipment on request, or an inspector you appoint.
  • Documents: TDS for the offered product, plus commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, COA and safety data sheet, depending on shipment and destination.
  • Handling and packaging: storage temperature, storage time and any agitation should follow the TDS. Packaging is agreed at quotation stage.

When you review the COA for this range, check that it reports the softening point and every other property your specification lists. A penetration result inside 40–100 on its own says little. Tiger Bitumen’s PMB TDS and COA checklist is a useful reference.

Frequently Asked Questions

PMB 40/100 FAQs

What is PMB 40/100?

A polymer modified bitumen with a nominal penetration range of 40 to 100 (0.1 mm) at 25°C. It is a wide range that overlaps five other PMB ranges.

Is 40/100 a complete EN 14023 designation?

No. It's the penetration part only. The complete designation also includes a softening-point requirement set by your specification, which is confirmed at quotation stage.

Why would a specification use such a wide range?

A wide penetration window leaves the other class requirements, such as softening point and, where set, elastic recovery, to define the binder more precisely. That's why the full specification clause matters more than the range alone.

Can I use PMB 45/80 or 65/105 instead?

Only if your specification allows it. Those ranges overlap this one, but each is a separate class with its own requirements.

Will every delivery have a similar penetration result?

Every compliant batch falls somewhere between 40 and 100. If you need closer consistency between deliveries, raise it at enquiry stage so it can be discussed with your specification.

Is there a PG equivalent?

No automatic one. EN 14023 and PG are separate classification systems. If your project is specified in PG terms, we quote against the PG grade.

Can you supply this range for a project in Turkey?

Yes, as an international source supplying from Tiger Bitumen's export facilities in Karachi Free Zone and Ajman. Turkey Bitumen is not a Turkish manufacturer. Availability and schedule are confirmed for each enquiry.
