PMB 45/80 Polymer Modified Bitumen Specifications & Supply

A mid range modified binder for wearing and binder courses, quoted to your specification

PMB 45/80 is a polymer-modified bitumen with a nominal penetration range of 45 to 80 (0.1 mm at 25°C). It sits in the middle of our polymer modified bitumen range and is one of the more widely specified PMB ranges for asphalt wearing and binder courses.

TurkeyBitumen.com, operated by Tiger Bitumen and HY International Group, supplies this binder to contractors, asphalt producers, and importers with Turkey-related requirements. Supply is arranged from Tiger Bitumen’s export facilities in Karachi Free Zone, Pakistan, and Ajman, UAE, and every quotation is prepared against the specification you send us.

What the 45/80 Range Covers

A penetration result between 45 and 80 means the standard needle sinks between 4.5 and 8.0 mm into the binder at 25°C. That places this binder between the hard PMB ranges used for stiff, heavily loaded layers and the softer ranges used in colder conditions or specialized applications.

As with every PMB range, the numbers describe consistency only. Softening point, elastic response, cold behavior, and storage stability come from the class requirements in your specification, and they decide whether a particular product is acceptable.

PMB 45/80 or PMB 40/100?

The 45/80 window sits entirely inside the wider 40/100 window. Because of that, the two are often treated as near-equivalents. They aren’t.

  • A specification that names 45/80 asks for tighter consistency control than one that names 40/100.
  • A product declared as 40/100 may test anywhere from 40 to 100, so it isn’t automatically suitable where 45/80 is specified.
  • A product declared as 45/80 doesn’t automatically meet a 40/100 specification either, because each designation carries its own softening-point requirement and, depending on the specification, other property requirements.

If your documents allow either range, send us the full clause. We quote against the designation the specification actually names, not the one that happens to be closest.

Complete Designation and Softening Point

Under EN 14023, 45/80 is the penetration part of a designation. The complete designation adds a softening-point requirement chosen by the specifier from the standard’s classes, and the specification may add requirements for elastic recovery, storage stability, cold behavior and properties after ageing.

Different specifications can pair PMB 45/80 with different softening-point classes, so two offers for the “same” range may not be for the same binder. We don’t publish a single softening point for this range; the complete designation is confirmed at the quotation stage against your specification and the TDS supplied with our offer. For background, see Tiger Bitumen’s explanation of how EN 14023 designations are built.

Projects in Turkey commonly reference TS EN 14023 or a project technical specification based on it. Include whichever document governs your project with your enquiry.

Properties to Confirm Before Ordering

Property Status for the 45/80 range Commonly referenced test
Penetration at 25°C Fixed: 45-80 (0.1 mm) EN 1426
Softening point (ring and ball) Per the class in your specification EN 1427
Elastic recovery Per your specification, if required EN 13398
Storage stability Per your specification, if required EN 13399
Fraass breaking point Per your specification, if required EN 12593
Resistance to hardening (ageing) Per your specification, if required EN 12607-1

Values other than penetration depend on the complete designation. They are stated in the TDS for the offered product and reported on the batch COA.

Where the 45/80 Range Is Typically Specified

Mid-range modified binders are generally associated with surface and near-surface layers, for example:

  • Wearing courses on highways, expressways, and urban arterials
  • Binder courses where the design calls for a modified binder
  • Stone mastic asphalt and thin surfacing, where the mix design names a modified binder
  • Overlays and rehabilitation of existing pavements

Compared with 25/55, this range is less stiff and is often chosen where the layer needs more flexibility. These are typical uses, not design rules; the pavement engineer sets the range for each project.

Moving from Unmodified 50/70 or 60/70

Some projects move from an unmodified grade such as Bitumen 50/70 or 60/70 to a 45/80 modified binder. The penetration numbers look similar, but the change is not like-for-like:

  • The switch should come from a specification or design change, not from the supplier.
  • The asphalt mix design may need to be reviewed for the modified binder.
  • Mixing, storage, and handling temperatures should follow the TDS for the offered product, which may differ from what the plant uses for unmodified bitumen.

If you’re planning this change, send us the revised specification, and we’ll quote against it.

Related Binders

Binder How it related to the 45/80 range
PMB 25/55 Harder PMB range; overlaps between 45 and 55
PMB 40/100 Wider PMB range that fully contains 45/80; a separete class
PMB 65/105 Softer PMB rang; overlaps between 65 and 80
Bitumen 50/70 or 60/70 Unmodified penetration grades; no polymer , different specification basis
Performance Grade bitumen Separate classification by pavement temperature; no automatic PG equivalent for this range

Comparing Offers for This Range

Because 45/80 is widely specified, buyers often hold more than one quotation. Before comparing prices, check that each offer:

  • States the same complete designation, including the softening-point requirement
  • References the same standard or project specification
  • Comes with a TDS for that designation, not a generic PMB data sheet
  • Will be supported by a batch COA that reports every property your specification lists
  • Is quoted on the same Incoterm, packaging basis, and inspection scope

Tiger Bitumen’s PMB TDS and COA checklist covers the document checks in more detail.

If you currently source this binder from a Turkish supplier, send us the designation and specification you buy against. We’ll quote on the same basis, so you can compare specification match, documentation, inspection, shipping terms, and delivered cost directly. Availability, quantity, and shipment schedule are confirmed for each enquiry.

Documentation, Inspection and Handling

  • Terms: FOB, CFR, or CIF.
  • Inspection: SGS or Bureau Veritas before shipment, upon request, or an inspector you appoint.
  • Documents: TDS for the offered product, plus a commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, COA, and safety data sheet, depending on the shipment and destination.
  • Handling and packaging: storage temperature, storage time, and any agitation should follow the TDS. We agree on packaging at the quotation stage to suit your receiving arrangements.

Frequently Asked Questions

PMB 45/80 FAQs

What is PMB 45/80?

A polymer modified bitumen with a nominal penetration range of 45 to 80 (0.1 mm) at 25°C. It sits in the middle of the nine PMB ranges we quote.

Is 45/80 a complete EN 14023 designation?

No. It's the penetration part only. The complete designation also includes a softening-point requirement set by your specification, which is confirmed at quotation stage.

Can a 45/80 binder be used where 40/100 is specified?

Not automatically. Although 45/80 sits inside the 40/100 window, each designation has its own softening-point and property requirements. We quote against the range your specification names.

Can this range replace Bitumen 50/70 or 60/70?

Only if the specification is changed to call for it. A modified binder isn't a like-for-like swap, and the mix design and handling temperatures may need review.

Why do two offers for the same range differ?

They may be for different complete designations. Check that both state the same softening-point class, standard and additional properties before comparing price.

Is there a PG equivalent?

No automatic one. EN 14023 and PG are separate classification systems. If your project is specified in PG terms, we quote against the PG grade.

Can you supply this range for a project in Turkey?

Yes, as an international source supplying from Tiger Bitumen's export facilities in Karachi Free Zone and Ajman. TurkeyBitumen.com is not a Turkish manufacturer. Availability and schedule are confirmed for each enquiry.
